VOL12 Shime-waza

$29.95

Shime-waza  is a unique presentation of the principal blood and air deprivation techniques used to restrain, cause intense neurological pain and or incapacitate an opponent used in Koryu Uchinadi. This highly functional 2-person drill brings together no fewer than 36 individual techniques, which provide the learner with an extraordinary repertoire of Kata-based application practices. Learning how to render an opponent unconscious, through impeding the flow of blood and/or air, is a timeless art kept alive in only very few disciplines, and Koryu Uchinadi is one of them.

Choking and strangulation techniques are not the principal source of self-defence used in the art of Karate, but it is, nonetheless, an inescapable component of effective fighting and also reflects a forgotten element from this arts early origins. While almost everything we do in percussive impact-based traditions is to avoid ever being seized, if and when such a thing was to ever happen, taking immediate control of the situation is of the utmost importance, and it is at this point in time that Shime-waza reveals its true value. I doubt anyone could dispute the sense it makes to be well prepared and never need Shime-waza than to wind up in a situation someday with the safety of your life or well-being left only to chance.

Shime-waza [Vol #12] is a unique presentation of the principal blood and air deprivation techniques used to restrain, cause intense neurological pain and or incapacitate an opponent used in Koryu Uchinadi/古流沖縄手. Developed under the supervision of leading authority, Patrick McCarthy Hanshi 9th dan/マカシーパトリック 範士九段, this highly functional 2-person drill brings together no fewer than 36 individual techniques, which provide the learner with an extraordinary repertoire of Kata-based application practices.

Learning how to render an opponent unconscious, through impeding the flow of blood and/or air, is a timeless art kept alive in only very few disciplines, and Koryu Uchinadi is one of them. Like so much of our curriculum, this highly functional 2-person practice culminates timeless institutionalised learning passed down through through generations in conceptual application templates, concealed amidst other fighting skills in solo-routines, known as Kata [型/形].

Choking and strangulation techniques are not the principal source of self-defence used in the art of Karate, but it is, nonetheless, an inescapable component of effective fighting and also reflects a forgotten element from this arts early origins. Shime-waza is something that every learner should gain some level of proficiency in; As all self-protection practices can be bridged together by the same acts of physical violence that are habitual in human nature. Early pioneers of this art fully understood the possibility of inadvertently winding up in a self-defence situation where, not knowing such skills, could be detrimental to one’s safety; hence, the need to enhance one’s overall skillset.

Testimonials
In this world of, “become an expert simply by gleaming Google, watching some Youtube clips, or translating books researched by others,” … The contributions (born of often troublesome field research) of Hanshi McCarthy stand head and shoulder above all. – Cezar Borkowski Hanshi 9th Dan,  Toronto – Canada

McCarthy Sensei is one of the most decorated and well-versed western proponents of Karatedo and Kobudo with the credentials to match. In short, you won’t find a more qualified or more well read person on the history, philosophy, techniques and kata of the tradition that you and I practice.  I view McCarthy sensei as a scholar-warrior reworking the cultural artefacts and ambiguity of our way of thinking about the tradition of Karate… Like his teachers, he is truly an encyclopaedia of karate history and techniques. – Mario McKenna [Tou’on Ryu Vancouver]

“Not only was I astonished by the depth of your knowledge of the historical roots of Karatedo, I was also pleasantly surprised by the incredible depth of your technical knowledge, skills and ability. Your unique ability to draw others and myself so thoroughly into your subject is in no part due to your involvement in, and love of, Karate-do.” – William Dometrich, (1935-2012 US Chito Ryu & Karatedo Hanshi DNBK)

“I now better understand the application principles of karate through having studied Koryu [Uchinadi].” – Vince Morris [Kissaki Kai]

“History will remember McCarthy’s contributions simply because they’re too important to ignore.” – Chuck Merriman [Hanshi 9th Dan, Jundokan Goju-Ryu]

Hanshi Patrick McCarthy is one the few real masters that I have ever had the honour and privilege of meeting. These days so many people call themselves “masters”, however very few are, this I have found this out over my 25 years of training. Hanshi McCarthy is the real deal! – Mike Sywyk [Kyoshi 7th Dan, Jundokan Goju Ryu]
