What is KU Futari-geiko/二人稽古?
KU Futari-geiko literally means, “2-person practice” [or training]. It is NOT, however, a style! In KU it’s a completely systematised and style-free method of 2-person application practices. Highly functional practices which, we believe, transcends style and is/are NOT bound by rules. KU Futari-geiko is the one single thread which weaves together the very fabric of all traditional karate.
In 1993, after years of research in Japan, China and SE Asia, I created and introduced both the KU-theory and corresponding 2-person practices to the West. Since that time, I have taught hundreds of kata-based application seminars all over the world and to very receptive instructors of every traditional karate style.
Based upon the HAPV-Theory the KU Futari-geiko System includes:
#1. Percussive impact [giving & receiving, along with associated issues] ~ 29 techniques.
#2. Clinch-work ~ 36 techniques.
#3. Joint manipulation & limb entanglement ~ 72 techniques.
#4. Blood & air deprivation ~ 36 techniques.
#5. Balance displacement ~ 55 techniques.
#6. Groundwork ~ 72 techniques.
#7. Attacking anatomically vulnerable locations ~ See #3.
#8. Escapes & counters ~ 36 techniques.
#9. Riai-Tegumi [理合手組] ~ the unique and catalytic-like 2-person engagement activity, which brings learners into contact with unscripted and random HAPV [Acts of Physical Violence that are Habitual in human nature] exchanges while using timeless templated application response practices as the basis of discovery and growth. Beginning engagement from either a stand-up, clinch, and or ground position, offensive and defensive activity feature percussive impact and/or seizing, to encourage escapes and counter activity, using varying levels of aggressive resistance, which continuously test the veracity of one’s learning, skill, ability to constantly adapt and progress….
KU Futari-geiko can and does strengthen the delivery system of any traditional karate style without adversely affecting its cosmetic appearance. This is why KU Futari-geiko has become one of the most sought after, and widely imitated, 2-personal application-based methods of practice any where in the world today.
*HAPV-theory Note: The Habitual Acts of Physical Violence represent the actual contextual premise around which Karate was originally based.
The KU Futari-geiko drills are wonderful practices and can be easily learned through our educational DVD’s. Please see DVD Vol’s #1 and #11 thru #16 here https://www.koryu-uchinadi.com/store
